What causes ridges to appear on one's fingernails besides vitamin deficiencies?

My co-worker has used glue-on nails for years but hasn't now for quite some time. As her nails are growing out, she has ridges that she never had before. Diabetes runs in her family %26amp; I know that the nails can indicate other health problems. Any ideas? What causes ridges to appear on one's fingernails besides vitamin deficiencies?
Ridges or (corruguations) in nails occur when nail growth is uneven, usually because of illness or injury. Gentle buffing can minimize ridges. Try a Ridge Filler to help level the nail surface, making shallow ridges and other imperfections practically disappear while conditioning with Calcium and Pro-Vitamin B5.

Hope this helps! What causes ridges to appear on one's fingernails besides vitamin deficiencies?
I believe her nails have been injured from the artificial nails.
