Why do the plates separate at the ridges such as along the East Pacific Rise or the Mid Atlantic Ridge?

Why do the plates separate at the ridges such as along the East Pacific Rise or the Mid Atlantic Ridge? Why do the plates separate at the ridges such as along the East Pacific Rise or the Mid Atlantic Ridge?
Because of plate tectonics: volcano activity in the Atlantic, is separating the plates of Europe and America. Because the plates are moving, on an other place, the plates will meet eachother, which will cause earthquakes, also volcanic activity and the rise of mountains. Why do the plates separate at the ridges such as along the East Pacific Rise or the Mid Atlantic Ridge?
These are regions of divergent plates. Due to the theory of plate tectonics, plates are moving relative to each other.

The either converge, diverge or slide across each other.
