What causes vertical ridges on fingernails? Is it due to a deficiency?

Is there a reason for these ridges forming, (e.g.diet - being deficient in a certain vitamin/mineral) or is there anything that can be taken to avoid them forming? What causes vertical ridges on fingernails? Is it due to a deficiency?
I think it's a natural thing, not sure that it's a deficiency because they sell products to buff the ridges off so unless everyone is deficient in the same thing I think you just need to get a Nail Buffer. What causes vertical ridges on fingernails? Is it due to a deficiency?
get more calcium...that should solve it.
Nails naturally become ridged as we get older, say maddle aged onwards

If you are not that old then you are probably mechanically (eg banging them while at work) damaging your nail bed causing nails to grow ridged

try not to buff them too much though, they will become thin and weak
It's caused by damage to the cuticle area. It could be something as simple as dry cuticles. Buy yourself a ridge-removing emery board, and then 'buff' them flat followed by a a good buff and moisturiser.
Once the bed of the cuticle is damaged (easy done not protecting your hands) no amount of vitamins etc will cure these ridges however as already explained you can get rid of them by buffing with a special emery board. The only problem with this is that it weakens the nail and makes them more susceptible to spliting. The other alternative is to keep your nails neatly trimmed and buff them to shine so they look clean and unobstrusive or give them a coat of nail polish.
Nothing a healthy balanced diet shouldn't fix.

Calcium deficiency it sounds like. More cheese/milk/etc.
calcium deficiency.take calcium tablets.increase skimmed milk intake.eat lot of curds.
i think it`s when you have been unwell or stressed or something like that - could be wrong though, but when you are unwell, maybe you dont eat properly - so yes - it probably is a deficiency of something in your diet.
i have this problem as well so you are not on your own i often wondered why as well
